Why Under-Eating Can Be Detrimental?!

I know a lot of people think that losing weight all comes down to eating low amounts of calories and burning excess amounts of energy. But what happens when we are actually eating way fewer calories than we are burning off? A severe impact on energy levels, causing feelings of physical tiredness and mental fatigue, which may impair a person’s daily functioning. Furthermore, eating less can lower your basal metabolic rate, meaning you will slow down the number of calories you are burning which is not what we want when it comes to fat burning and muscle gain.

The top detrimental effects from undereating are:

  • Fatigue
  • Increased sickness (decrease in immune responses)
  • Hair loss
  • The feeling of being cold
  • Reproductive issues (loss of period)
  • Skin problems
  • Depression
  • Constipation

When we are not fuelling our body with a sustainable amount of nutrients it begins to shut off supposedly “unnecessary” functions. This is therefore why we experience certain effects like those listed above.

Some tips for healthfully increasing the intake of calories include:

  • eating meals more frequently throughout the day
  • eating meals high in protein
  • eating more complex carbohydrates, such as rice or pasta
  • consuming a moderate amount of monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fats, such as nuts and avocados
  • always include a good selection of vegetables in the diet

So how do you know you are eating enough calories? Once you have worked with a health professional or sought help from the team, you will be able to utilise a mobile phone app called “My Fitness Pal”. This is an app where you can track the foods you are eating and make sure you are hitting the set macronutrient and calorie goals set to your individual needs!

If you feel as though you are undereating or experiencing any of the symptoms stated above, it is crucial you seek professional advice from a doctor and or dietitian. I hope this information has been helpful for you! Like always the team is here to help you! If you feel you need further help with your eating journey please send us an email or call us, you can find our contact details here.
